There are many free SEO tools which can help you to measure the influence of your backlinks, to check the rankings and your onsite SEO parameters. I was working with numerous tools for my moneymakingideasblog.com and these are the best free SEO tools in my opinion.

Open Site Explorer
This is probably the most famous SEO tool available. You need to register (for free) to get more than a few searches per day. When you register, you will get unlimited number of searches, but with limited amount of backlinks (1000 backlinks for given URL) shown.
Majestic SEO
Free service is limited to top 5 backlinks and top 5 referring domains. MajesticSEO is also cheaper than Open Site Explorer (it costs $47 per month, compared to $97/month for OSE) and, in my opinion- even better. If you can afford one SEO tools for backlinks check, I would go for this one.
Ahrefs
This is a very comprehensive SEO tool. It is relatively new, but it already has a very loyal subscriber base. You can get 15 requests per day as a registered member or 5 without a registration. I would say it is very limited option, comparing to the paid version which is great.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Tool
This is a desktop app that allows you deeper analysis of your website’s pages. It is limited to first 500 URL requests in free version, then you have to pay for using it. You can get very detailed analysis with this tools, such as link info (dofollow or nofollow links), alt text, heading tags, etc.
Wordtracker
I use this tool a lot. It is one of the oldest but still one of the most reliable keyword research tools. Like any other, Wordtracker has a free and paid version. With the free version you get around 100 related keywords for your desired keyphrase.
SEMRush
SEMRush is a competitive keyword analysis tool. With free account you have access to ten reports per one day. You can check on your competitors and see what keywords are they using for their campaigns. SEMRush is very detailed and it provides you with highly important information such as average volume, level of competition, similar keywords, etc.
MyBlogGuest
You can use this service to search for the websites in your niche who are accepting guest posts, which is a great time saver for your link building strategy. It is free for bloggers who are searching for the guest post opportunities.
Follower Wonk
It is actually a social media marketing tool, a Twitter analysis tool, more precisely. You can identify influencers and also find a Twitter users who have a blog related to your niche, what you can use for a guest posting opportunity.
Ubersuggest
This is a small but powerful tool and a great time saver. Basically it is a free keyword suggestion tool. You can use it to generate a list of keyword phrases related to your keywords.
Google Free Tools
The best things in life are free. Google has various tools which can help you to track down your SEO campaign, improve your keyword research and even find guest posting opportunities.
- – Google Adwords Keyword Tool: it is one of the most powerful keyword research tools on the internet and it is free. GAKT can be a great resource for your keyword research if you use it wisely.
- – Google Analytics: You can track information about your visitors, demography, etc. You can also search for the traffic sources to your website, and possible conversions. Although I must admit it is not perfect, it is an inevitable part in my SEO tools arsenal.
- – Google Webmaster Tools: it is a great tool because it gives you access to Google’s information about your website. You can see crawling errors on your website if there is any, or even malware found on your blog. The “traffic” option is more detailed than the same option in Google Analytics. It shows search queries and your backlinks.
- -Google Alerts: if you are serious about building your online reputation and if you want to stay updated about your niche, you would need to set up Google alerts. This way you can follow even your competitor’s backlinks and their guestposts.
